Comparison

SAP EWM vs WM

Warehouse Management (WM) and Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) aren't two versions of the same thing. They're different approaches to running a warehouse. Here's a clear comparison so you know what each option means for your operation.

The main difference

WM is the older solution that tracks stock at the storage-location level, and for its time it was more than enough. EWM is its successor. It manages the warehouse in more detail, supports automation, and runs natively in S/4HANA.

The key point, though, is that WM support ends in 2027. So the question isn't "WM or EWM" but rather "when and how do we move to EWM". The comparison below shows what you gain by doing so.

When WM, when EWM

If you run WM today and it works for you, there's no need to panic overnight. Planning the transition now does make sense, though, both because of the end of support and because of what EWM adds on top.

WM is usually still enough today if…

…you have a simple warehouse without automation, stable processes, and no S/4HANA move planned yet.

Choose EWM if…

…you're moving to S/4HANA, planning warehouse automation, or you need detailed control and real-time visibility. And also if you simply want a solution with a future.

Frequently asked questions

Is EWM just a newer version of WM?

No. EWM is a separate solution with its own data model and process logic. Moving from WM is therefore not an upgrade but a full migration.

Do we have to move from WM to EWM?

Yes, sooner or later. SAP is ending WM support in 2027, so for long-term operation EWM (or another WMS) is unavoidable.

Is EWM suitable for smaller warehouses too?

Yes. EWM can be deployed in the Embedded variant, which suits most companies including small and mid-sized warehouses. You don't need a huge operation.

How do we know when it's time for EWM?

Typical signals are a planned move to S/4HANA, interest in automation, the need for more accurate tracking, or the approaching end of WM support. We're happy to talk it through with you, no strings attached.

We'll go through your processes with you and advise whether and when it makes sense to move to EWM. No pressure and no sales talk.
